That moment when…

Life is hard. After all, it kills you. Katharine Hepburn

Life is always full of awesome moments. As a mom, those moments are multiplied. The awesomeness runs the gamut from maddening, to hilarious, to embarrassing, to absolutely breathtaking.

This week, there seemed to be more moments on the not so awesome side of the house. I realized that if I were getting periods, which I’m not because of breastfeeding (sorry men), this would likely be the week I’d have it. I have been moody and agitated and easily overwhelmed.

I’ve learned in life it’s really not about what happens so much as it is about your perspective on it. I try hard to maintain my perspectacles each day and find the good in everything, even if it takes me a day or so to get there. This week, in a few of the moments themselves, I didn’t have as good of an attitude as I’d have hoped. We all have our days and I’ve apparently had a few of them here lately.

Here’s a few of this week’s “That moment when…” mommy moments.

That moment when…

1. I said “shit storm” in front of everyone in my women’s bible study at church.

2. I had to tell my son to stop brushing his brother’s penis with a tooth brush.

3. I had to tell both my sons it is inappropriate to try and stick a tooth brush in between each other’s butt cheeks.

(You can’t make this stuff up folks.)

4. My son pooped in the bathtub…and then the floor…and then played in it, tried to eat it and then slipped on it in the bathtub. Bless!

I’m sorry for the grossness, but seriously…

5. All 3 of my sons tried to climb back inside my body, at the same time and I was unable to move without touching or holding everyone continuously. (This is an every day, multiple times a day occurrence.)

6. I was working out and my littlest came walking by just as I was doing a jump lunge and my hand knocked him in the head, sweeping him off his feet and onto the floor (Yeah, mother of the year. He was fine!)

7. I raised my voice and lost my cool at my sons over spilled water…not even milk! Just water! What is wrong with me!?? (In my defense, it was A LOT of water! Multiple times!)

Only the mediocre are always at their best. Jean Giraudoux

8. I got my hair cut for the first time since May, and she cut it exactly the way I told her NOT to and I was so aggravated about it I wanted to punch something and cry. (It takes months/years for my hair to grow and in 5 seconds she ruined months of growth. Pissed.)

wpid-1031141653.jpg
I now have a cute little choppily layered shelf in the front… Perfect!

9. All 3 boys screamed the entire way through the grocery store because I wouldn’t allow them to continue fighting over a tape measure. (I know, worst mom ever.)

10. My youngest somehow snuck his tiny hands into the trash can and scooped out an avocado pit covered in coffee grinds and got it stuck in his mouth.

My life needs editing. Mort Sahl

11. My son had a full blown, snot bubbles coming out of his nose, threw himself on the floor, slapped himself in the face, needed to take a time out fit over me telling him he needed to keep his shirt on because it’s cold outside.

12. My youngest child bit my collar bone. In his defense, I think it was mostly an accident. (Teething is a beast.)

wpid-1101141221.jpg

13. My sons laughed their tiny adorable heads off over hollering, “SHAMPOOOOOO!??? THAT’S SILLY!!!” over and over and over again. (This one made me laugh too though.)

14. The dogs destroyed a package that I’d been waiting for and I had to pick up 5,000 (literally) business cards all over the yard. Then under my breath I said, “stupid dogs!” (who I love) and then my son continued to repeat “stupid dogs” for 5 solid minutes.

wpid-1101141338.jpg

15. Not 10 minutes later we couldn’t find one of my son’s blankets. Check outside where we last had it and the same dogs who destroyed the package were eating my son’s blanket. I probably yelled.

wpid-1101141412.jpg

16. I allowed my sons to eat a few pieces of their Halloween candy prior to eating any real food just so I could also snab a few bites myself without feeling guilty for stealing their candy.

wpid-1101141350c.jpg
Sometimes we all just need some chocolate!

17. It was 38 degrees, windy and rainy for our long awaited night of trick or treating and we all froze to death in the name of fun and sugar. But we will not be moved…the fun will be had! And it was!

wpid-1031142031a.jpg
Wind blown, soaking wet and frozen. This is the true Frozen of Halloween! 🙂

wpid-1031141958.jpg

18. All 3 boys were sick and the youngest one, who had been crying all morning unless on my boob, finally fell asleep and then my other 2 sick sons woke him up because they were screaming and crying while I peed for 3 seconds.

wpid-1101141228.jpg

19. I was kneeling down and my youngest came and blew raspberries on my butt! I kid you not.

But of course, each of these moments were woven together by absolutely beautiful moments of motherhood.

Like that moment when my son helped my littlest nugget walk down the hill.

wpid-1027141721a.jpg

And when my little guy walked the whole yard holding my hand.

wpid-1027141722.jpg

And then my other sweet pea joined us.

wpid-1027141726.jpg

That moment when they all played in our heart of leaves.

wpid-1027141718.jpg

wpid-1027141715.jpg

And we carved a pumpkin together.

wpid-1031141247a.jpg

Then I got to take them trick or treating as the cutest skunks I’ve ever seen.

wpid-1031141949.jpg

And then we got to swim in a sea of candy and eat way too much sugar in a 30 minute window and just enjoy being together.

“Some moments are nice, some are nicer, some are even worth writing about.” ― Charles Bukowski

Regardless of the chaos and my less than perfect moments of impatience and over reacting, we made it through the week. Come to think of it, it was actually a really good week! Everyone survived and hopefully my emotional pms will cease next week. In the mean time, I’m trying to remind myself to live in the moment, even the messy ones.

Especially the messy ones.

  1. Is it bad that this made me laugh out loud? During trick or treating a lady nearly ran us over and I screamed at her and dropped the F bomb…. Which my daughter hen repeated immediately after. We all have those moments… Thankfully they are just that- moments in otherwise wonderful days.

    • Hahahaha! Thank you for sharing that! It makes me feel better! You’re so right…they are just moments in otherwise wonderful moments and days. Glad it made you laugh…after the fact, it all makes me laugh too! Lol 😀

      • Aww Thank you! For some of it I did laugh in the moment…like raspberries on my butt…for others, it took me a minute to laugh haha!

And I have to admit I kinda stole the word perspectacles. I’ve actually used it in the past, but another much more famous blogger named Glennon Doyle Melton of Momastery used it and would be one to get more credit for it lately haha ☺ But I still like to tell myself it was an original Rachael!

  2. Most people are going to say, “it’s just hair”. I’ve actually cried in while getting my hair cut once. I told the hairdresser, “It was just allergies”. Lol. So many of these made me laugh. I would be the one to say shit-storm at church for sure! In terms of us, I was interrupted from commenting by my daughter asking what brown mush was on her foot. I had to smell it to be sure. Still wasn’t sure. Told her I thought it was chocolate. No sooner did I say that that she and her brother both started licking her foot. She exclaimed, “deee-ish-ous!” So it def is chocolate. Lol. Case solved.

    • Haha Alana this made me laugh out loud! Thank you! That allergy thing for your hair was hilarious. I’ve had sooo many bad haircuts. More bad than good I’d say. Its so hard to find a hair dresser I love. Its why I just tend to not get haircuts haha. It wouldn’t be so bad if my hair wasn’t so unbelievably slow at growing. And the questionable poop or chocolate is hilarious!!! That’s happened several times here too. Lol! At least it turned out to be chocolate. Its been poop over here this week lol! These moments make for good laughs and stories after the fact! ☺

  3. Love this, Rachael! I feel for ya… Because if it was me I totally would have lost it during a lot of those moments… Especially the poo in the bathtub and floor and eating it. Way to be an awesome, Mom! And thanks for sharing your moments, cause you know we all have moments like those. 🙂
P.s. your boys as skunks was SO cute!

    • Oh Marla thank you! I honestly didn’t feel so awesome in a few moments this week and certainly didn’t maintain my cool with the poop episode. It was like a scene in a movie haha. But I appreciate your sweetness! Motherhood is never dull that’s for sure 😃

    • Oh thank you! Yeah…it amazes me how different the week can feel just based in me and my attutude. The stuff is usually the same. It’s my attitude that makes or breaks it. Here’s to a better mood! 😃

  4. What a vivid picture of motherhood you have shared. You cannot make this stuff up! It is awesome that you showed despite all the craziness how there is still so much love that you share with your three little guys. A really beautiful, authentic post!

    • Thank you Samantha! Even though my boys are young, I already feel how fast it goes. it’s insane. So I do try hard to appreciate and soak in the moments I have while I have them, even when it’s hard! I’ll miss it all very soon!

  5. Well, if I were in your Bible study and you said “shit storm,” I probably would have laughed. I love your hair although layers can be high maintenance and its annoying when stylists don’t listen. You’ve definitely had your fair share of moments, funny, beautiful and sometimes gross.

  6. I am so feeling you on this entire post! Number 1 made me laugh out loud right off the bat! I would have laughed so hard if I was there! Maybe we can both be done pms-ing by next week. Love this so much!! And as always, loved the photos!!

    • Oh thank you Tricia!! The leaves were actually a swollen idea from sue Parke! I lived hers and had to try it haha… It was fun for then to run through and mess it up mostly…and eat some leaves. ☺I’ve always been surrounded by boys too and had 3 brothers. I love it!

  7. Oh my goodness, it sounds like you had quite a full week! I’ve got a little boy myself, so I can definitely relate to some of the things your little ones did! Kids, where do they get their crazy ideas from, right? LOL

  8. Ohhhhh my! You are freaking hilarious. And I’ve been there too with the “stupid dog” comment. The “stupid dog” ate the rest of my sandwich off of the table when I ran to take my toddler potty and I came back and saw it was gone and said “Stupid dog ate my sandwich!” and that is all I heard for the next week. PLUS she made it a point to tell everyone (while crossing her arms) “My stupid dog ate mommy’s sandwich” 🙂

    • Hahaha oh that’s too cute! Kids always repeat exactly what we dint want them to huh!? Luckily there hasn’t been anything too bad yet….they did repeat “what the heck” i be day though 😒 hopefully we can keep it at that! 😀

  11. I’m not really sure where to start… the skunk costumes are adorable; I hope you got all the cards back; love heart leaves; and hand holding; every now and then I accidentally swear in front of my kiddies and they still seam okay; hoping biting is a one time deal; and ooof! you’ve had a week of mixed and mostly wonderful here.

  12. Bless your heart mama! I totally laughed out loud but I totally feel you! I accidently punched my two year old in the face while getting up from sitting and walked into what I thought surely must have been a loose elephant with diarrhea in our bathroom. Nope, just my son pooping in the bathtub. Reading your post made me realize that I’m not alone…crazy stuff happens regularly to all moms!

    • Oh my gosh haha!!! You’re certainly not alone. We all have our less than perfect moments and motherhood is never a dull moment for sure. It makes for good stories and blogs though huh!? And I love the “me too” moments that come, from sharing honest pieces of motherhood…not just the good. Although in its own way, it’s all good isn’t it!? 😉

  13. The kiddo’s been under the weather lately, so every time she whines, “Mommy!” I almost blow a fuse. I need a lot of time to recuperate after being in public places, which means a lot of time sitting in silence while she plays with Daddy. When she’s not well or just misses me more than normal, she’s constantly in and out of my peaceful quiet place, and I don’t get the relaxation and peace that I need to be kind and nice to everyone.

    • Oh Naomi, I’m sorry. That’s a tough spot to be. I hope you can find some time for yourself to decompress. It makes us better mommies when we can take care of ourselves appropriately. My thoughts are with you. Breathe and remember this too shall pass…and you may even miss it when it’s over.

      • Thanks! She’s feeling better, so I’m getting to unwind a bit better. I’d suck it up and deal with it, but I’m really just not nice to be around if I don’t unwind and de-stress. 🙂
